Performing Hajj

Hajj Tamattu: Umrah First, Then Hajj
(This is the Hajj performed by the majority of pilgrims)

1. Ihram

  • Ghusl: Perform a full-body purification (Ghusl).
  • Ihram Garments: Wear the special Ihram garments.
  • Intention: Make the intention for Umrah by saying “Labbaik Allahumma bi Umrah”.
  • Talbiyah: Recite the Talbiyah (“Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik, Labbaik Laa Shareeka Laka Labbaik”).
  • Restrictions: Avoid acts forbidden while in the state of Ihram.

2. Umrah

  • Tawaf: Perform Tawaf by circling the Ka`bah seven times.
  • **Rakah**: Pray two Rakah behind Maqam Ibrahim.
  • Sa’i: Perform Sa`i by walking seven times between Safa and Marwah.
  • Hair: Shave or trim your hair and remove the Ihram garments.

3. Going to Mina

  • Ihram: Put on Ihram garments again and make the intention for Hajj by saying “Labbaik Allahumma Hajjan”.
  • Mina: Stay in Mina on the 8th of Dhul-Hijja and perform five prayers, starting with Zuhr and ending with Fajr on the day of Arafat.

4. Going to Arafat

  • Arafat: Leave for Arafat on the morning of the 9th of Dhul-Hijja and stay until sunset.
  • Activities: Glorify Allah, supplicate, repent, and ask for forgiveness. Pray Zuhr and Asr shortened and combined at Zuhr time.

5. Muzdalifah

  • Travel: Leave for Muzdalifah soon after sunset on the 9th of Dhul-Hijja.
  • Prayers: Perform Maghrib and the shortened Isha prayers combined. Collect 49 pebbles (or 70 if staying an extra day in Mina). Stay overnight and perform Fajr prayer.

6. Jammarat

  • Mina: Leave Muzdalifah for Mina shortly before sunrise. Stone Jammarat Al-Aqabah with seven pebbles.
  • Sacrifice: Slaughter your animal.
  • Hair: Shave or trim your hair.
  • Restrictions: Remove Ihram garments; all restrictions are lifted except for the ban on sexual intercourse.

7. Tawaf Al Ifadah

  • Tawaf: Perform Tawaf Al Ifadah or Tawaf Al Ziyarah and Sa`i between Safa and Marwah.
  • Return: Go back to your tents in Mina.

8. Return to Mina

  • Tashreeq Days: Spend the Tashreeq days (11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul-Hijja) in Mina. Stone the three Jammarat after Zuhr each day, starting with the small one and ending with Al-Aqabah. You may leave on the 12th after stoning the Jammarat if you wish.

9. Tawaf Al Wida

  • Farewell Tawaf: Go to Makkah and perform a farewell Tawaf (Tawaf Al Wida). Pray two Rak`ah. Let this be the last thing you do in Makkah.

Hajj Qiraan: Umrah and Hajj Combined

  • Ihram: Wear Ihram garments at the Miqaat and make the intention for Hajj and Umrah by saying “Labbaik Allahumma bi Hijjah Wa Umrah”.
  • Tawaf: Perform Tawaf upon arrival in Makkah.
  • Mina: Stay in Mina on the 8th of Dhul-Hijja and perform five prayers from Zuhr to Fajr of Arafat day.
  • Follow Steps: Continue from step 4 above (“Going to Arafat”).

Hajj Ifrad: Hajj Only

  • Ihram: Wear Ihram garments at the Miqaat and make the intention for Hajj by saying “Labbaik Allahumma Hajjan”.
  • Tawaf: Perform Tawaf upon arrival in Makkah.
  • Mina: Stay in Mina on the 8th of Dhul-Hijja and perform five prayers from Zuhr to Fajr of Arafat day.
  • Follow Steps: Continue from step 4 above (“Going to Arafat”).

Principles: The Pillars of Hajj

  1. Ihram: Entering the state of Ihram with intention.
  2. Wuqoof of Arafat: Standing in Arafat.
  3. Tawaf of Hajj: Tawaf Al Ifadah or Tawaf Al Ziyarah.
  4. Sai of Hajj: Sai between Safa and Marwah.

Note: Missing any of these pillars means the Hajj is incomplete until performed.

Optional Acts of Hajj

  • Bathing: Taking a shower before Ihram.
  • Ihram Garments: Wearing the two-piece Ihram for men.
  • Talbiyah: Reciting the Talbiyah.
  • Mina: Spending the night following the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah in Mina.
  • Supplication: After stoning the small and middle Jammarat.
  • Arrival Tawaf: For those performing Hajj Qiraan or Ifrad.

Note: No penalty if these are missed.

Compulsory Acts of Hajj

  • Ihram: Entering Ihram from one of the appointed Miqaat points.
  • Arafat: Staying in Arafat until sunset.
  • Muzdalifah: Spending the night following the day of Arafat in Muzdalifah.
  • Mina: Spending the nights of the 10th and 11th of Dhul-Hijjah in Mina.
  • Rami: Stoning the Jammarat.
  • Tawaf: Tawaf Al Ifadah or Tawaf Al Ziyarah.
  • Hair: Shaving or trimming the hair (men only).

Note: Missing any compulsory acts requires a sacrifice of an animal in Makkah, to be distributed among the poor.

Forbidden Acts While in Ihram

  • Hair: Shaving or trimming any hair.
  • Nails: Cutting or trimming any nails.
  • Clothing for Men: Wearing a head cover or normal clothes sewn to fit the body.
  • Scent: Using any scent or perfume.
  • Hunting: Hunting land animals.
  • Physical Contact: Any sexual contact with the spouse.
  • Marriage: Proposing or contracting marriage.
  • Behavior: Quarreling, fighting, or arguing.

Expiation: Violations require expiation unless done out of forgetfulness, ignorance, or coercion, in which case there is no penalty, In Sha Allah.
